“In all I do I want to inspire beauty in other people. I want my work to give permission to people to add beauty to their own lives and homes. We try to marry form with function. So something like our Vida Pour Tea canisters which are very functional still look beautiful on your kitchen counter.”
This May is a very special month at The Table. First and foremost because this month we turn 8 years old! We are nearing a decade of serving the wonderful people of this community and beyond and being woven into the fabric of Asheboro’s diverse local businesses. Secondly, May is the month we celebrate all the wonderful mothers in our lives. So many of the people that have helped shape us into who we are at The Table are not only strong, creative and powerful women, they are also dedicated and loving mothers. From our Owner and Operator Dustie Gregson, to our Executive Chef Deanna Clement, our Front of House Manager Lorene Boatner, and several of our wait staff.
This month we wanted to introduce to you yet another incredible woman and mother who has helped us become who we are. Meet our amazing Graphic Designer and Creative Consultant, Lindsay Vance.
For the last 3 years Lindsay has had a hand in pretty much everything design related here at The Table, first in her capacity in the design department with the Cageless Birds, and now as an independent contractor.
Our menus, website, signage, social media graphics, custom Vida Pour Tea line, and many other projects all bear her intricate and meticulously executed handiwork.
Not only is she a talented artist and designer with a keen eye for beauty, she is also mother to her 2 year old son, Benjamin.
We recently got to sit down with Lindsay to ask about her process in design and how her craft has shaped who she is as a mother.
When asked what design means to her, Lindsay said, “Design is the management of perspectives. It’s the management of interrelationship skills between individual elements of art and humanity.”
The humanity element of art and design are crucial to Lindsay and are a vital part of her process when working on a new project.
When undertaking a new design she asks herself ‘what is the viewer going to think when they see this? What is THEIR perspective going to be?’
Taking this thought further she said, “Art can have multiple interpretations, depending on the viewer. But with design there is a specific message you want people to walk away with.”
When designing for The Table Lindsay is taking all of this into account as she creates thoughtful and beautiful designs that also communicate the atmosphere and values of our community.
“My conversations with Dustie (owner and operator of The Table) have never been just about the work. They've been deeper and they've led us to ask more intentional questions about the nature of collaboration and beauty for beauty’s sake. We ask ourselves questions like, ‘How does the Table encourage and empower people to build home?’ and, ‘ How do we best communicate the inclusive spirit of the Table?’ Those themes have been a thread in my work both with Cageless Birds and at the Table.“
When asked about how design has shaped how she mothers she responded, “In general, I want to give Benjamin beauty and for him to feel inspired to create. I desire to help him find a craft that enables him to express the beauty he sees in the world around him. My dream for him is that he would find work that’s not just a job, but that it would be one of connection. Something that serves a larger mission.”
Lindsay has been such a big part of our Table family and we are beyond grateful to have her on our team. Next time you buy a tin of tea, or look at one of our menus, or see any of our graphics pop up on your instagram feed, take a moment to look at it a little longer. To linger in the beauty. May you feel empowered and inspired to add beauty to your own life for beauty’s sake.
